
About
Samuel L. Hawkins. is a loving father, servant leader, community partner, and a dedicated civic volunteer. He was born and reared in Bronx, New York where he spent much of his childhood. He and his family moved to Greensboro, North Carolina where he graduated from Walter Hines Page High School in 1989. He then enlisted in the United States Navy. After serving, Commissioner Hawkins attended North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, majoring in Computer Science and Math Education. He has worked in both the public and private sectors as a consultant within the telecommunications industry as well as with architectural firms.
In 2015, Commissioner Hawkins was appointed to the Human Relations Commission for the City of Greensboro. He was voted the Chairman of the Human Relations Commission in 2017. During his 18 months on the commission, he co-founded and became chair of the Committee for Social Equity.
Commissioner Hawkins also served as a community partner for Thrive GSO and the Guilford County Re-entry Council. In 2022, he became the executive director of a learning center, which served African immigrants and refugees in Greensboro and High Point.


Candidate Hawkins continues to serve Greensboro as a commissioner of the Minimum Housing Standards Commission and the Greensboro Criminal Justice Advisory Commission.
Commissioner Hawkins has been described as one who bears a warmth and sincerity that many have found particularly refreshing. He believes in carrying out his duties with a servant’s heart, and understands that servant leadership means unselfish service. He has a strong belief that in moving forward, the best is yet to come.
